Playback image is wider than TV screen

I have recorded a number of Monk TV shows and most of them came out just fine. I recorded two Monk TV shows (Mr Monk and the Rapper, and Mr Monk and His Biggest Fan) on November 17th and 18th using a Toshiba D-VR650KU DVD/VCR Recorder. The TV picture displays as a wide screen image with full width displayed horizontally and “black bars” at the top and bottom. The TV channel shows in the upper left corner, and the “USA” logo shows in the bottom right corner. However, during playback, the channel shown on the TV in the upper left corner, is almost totally off the screen to the left, and the “USA” logo is almost totally off the screen to the right. Why isn’t the recorded image being displayed as it was shown on the TV? Toshiba Tech Support says it might be because the program is being transmitted in HD. Could that be true, and if so, how do I work around it to get the recording to display like the TV display? I have recorded many other Monk TV shows and didn't have this problem, so I don't know why it is happening now.

Sounds like you recorded in 16:9 and you have a 4:3 tv?
    You raise the blade,
    You make the change,
You rearange me till I'm sane.
You lock the door, throw away
    the key,
    There's someone in my head
    and it's not me.
