There are several. For ease of use I'd recommend AutoGK

If you use either of the "size" options it does a 2 pass conversion.
If you're impatient and just want one pass use the %quality mode.

    Another good choice is AviDemux

You have to do a bit more work to use AviDemux. Set XVID options etc..
    Likewise with StaxRip

If you're not into figuring out all the settings then AutoGK does a good job
by default, auto cropping and resizing as needed. If you want to cut out
some of the video, and just save what you want to watch, AviDemux is
pretty easy to use. StaxRip I got to work a few times but anything other
than mp3 audio and I could never get it to go. You may have better luck
    than I though.

There are others too but those are accessible without spending 3 months
reading up on codecs, bitrates, framerates etc..

This may be a naive question, but why would one want to convert a video file to an .avi file?

To take advantage of better compression capability of DivX or XviD, and, resultantly, a smaller file size.

I see. So one can get a longer movie on a disc...
Trouble I found with the .avi files is that I can't watch them with my video players on the TV screen.

These days, nearly all standalones are DivX/XviD compatible. AVI does not necessarily mean that it will have DivX/XviD. Only DivX/XviD encoded avi files have widespread standalone compatibility.Even then, there are quite a few configurations during encoding(e.g GMC, QPEL etc.) which have to be strictly maintained for standalone compatibility.

My two DVD players were bought a little while ago, well before "nowadays" - which may explain why they can't play any .avi files at all.
I sure hope I get old enough to see a STANDARD in all that codec mess we have to fight with right now.

@alsenor I haven't had a chance to try out many players but just from the divx compatible ones I've owned, OPPO, Philips dvp 642, Philips dvp 5990 there's been quite an improvement. Of the new models I only have the Philips dvp 5990 to judge by, but this player is much more tolerant of .avi input than my $200 OPPO. Also the OPPO could handle .divx files with selectable subs but it didn't really like it if there was more than one sub when you muxed in the idx/sub. This dvp 5990 doesn't seem to care.

Mentioning standards I'd have to guess what makes the difference is that it is UltraDivx compliant. Most of the time if the input .avi is decent looking about all I will do to "process" it is pull it into AviDemux and just save it. Another thing.. both my old divx players if you forgot and hit the Stop button instead of pause, well it was right back to the beginning of the file!! What a pain!!! My new player hitting stop acts just like it does for a DVD Video. Hit it once, acts like a pause.. hit it twice and you're back to the menu or whatnot. It's nice to have that consistency.

To put it more concisely I guess I'm sayin' divx players are ready for prime time!! For @$50 you can get a player that's quite versatile.

Where did you pick it up at? And for how much? Does it have a USB in the front of it like mine? Can it show a longer Names now?

                    Thanks ... and MERRY XMAS!

I got one at Walmart for about $54 I think. It has the USB port. Can even play some .wmv files. The file menu is still short on the names though. From what I've heard on other boards if you have a powered USB external drive it will play video files right off the drive. It does seem to deal better with divx/avi/xvid and 16x9 mode than my old players. I'm not sure how all this stuff works with pixel dimensions etc. but I know some 4x3 videos can be played with the TV in 16x9 mode. The picture is smaller but it looks sharper and the display seems correct. People aren't short and fat if you know what I mean. My old Philips dvp 642 couldn't do that.

                        Hi Miles,

Darn that means now I have to give my 5982 as present to my cousin and pick one of 5990s for myself.

                        1) I am surprised that it can play .wmv. That is GREAT ... so now I don't have to convert to .AVI ... just to wacth them on my TV.
Q: What did you mean it plays "Some" of the .wmv's?

                        2) Yes you can play your Movies directly from your External Hard Drive thru the USB ... here is how you do it ...

                        a) The External HD has to be formatted as FAT32. I have tried it with my 320GB and it works A-OK!
NOTE: The NTSF formatted drives won't work.

                        b) The Ext. HD if it is 3.5" then it will have it's own External Power ... so you are A-OK.
However, if you have a 2.5" ... then you have to use the Y Power cable to power the 2.5" drive off of your laptop or desktop. Because the USB 2.0 on the DVP5982 does not have enough power to drive the Drive. Or get an External Power charger for the External 2.5" HD.

                        c) I have expermented with USB Thumb-drives. It works up to 6GB ONLY!
If you have a Thumbdrive that it is 8GB (or 16GB, ...) as long as you have only 5.99GB of AVIs loaded on it then it will work just fine. I guess it can't drive anything more than that. Heck 6GB AVI is mor ethan enough for me ... that means about 8 titles.

                        Thanks! & MERRY XMAS!

                        G!

I didn't test it other than to try one. I have the impression it's more finicky about .wmv than .avi or .divx. I really haven't delved into it.

Maybe they lost the video file after burning their home movie to DVD and they noticed an error in the movie and they want to convert back to AVI to re-edit and re-burn to correct the error.
