    Slow Nero Burning

I have Windows XP, Nero 8. I have two issues. The first one is that I can copy music in about 10-15 minutes. When I try to copy a DVD it takes about 40 minutes. Others who have Nero 8 says it takes them about 15 minutes. Anyone? Newby here so take me through it step by step.
Also, recently my Nero StartSmart stops responding after it starts copying. I recently has some high CPU and slow response times on the computer. I am running Spyware Doctor and disabled McAfee as I am paying for Spyware Doctor right now and McAfee comes with Comcast. This helped the CPU and speed quite a bit. Anyone know this not responding issue with Nero?
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Let me add that I checked the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels. Primary was good to go. Secondary Transfer Mode was set to PIO Only for Device zero and 1. I changed them both to DMA if Available. The Current Transfer Mode was not editable. I uninstalled the driver and restarted the computer. Went to check the channels again and the Secondary Transfer Mode is back to PIO Only for both Devices. Not sure what's going on here.

What speed of the DVD discs are you using? The slower the speed the slower it will take to burn.

Have you tried re-installing Nero encase it got corrupted?

You might have a virus that's attacking part of Nero.

The best thing is to copy and past the log file because anyone might also notice something odd that doesn't belong.

The burn time on the DVD is 16X they are Maxell. I have not tried uninstalling it. I will try this now then try to burn. I will post my results.

Here is the burn log for the last attempt that actually failed at 5%. This was the last file on the log and last attempt was 3-14-09. Perhaps I am reading the log wrong but I don't see this date in there. I will attempt again tonight (3-16-09) and post that as well (that's if it doesn't fail again):

Okay, I reinstalled Nero and burned a copy of a DVD. One good thing is that it actually burned this time. It took 52 minutes though. The person I got the DVD from has Nero 8 and is using Sony 16X. Below is the last log file available. Has to be user error. Anyone?

Actually I found the links you provided earlier in my quest to solve the problem. This is how was able to check the DMA/PIO modes and report them. I followed those instructions exactly. As for the log, I am obviously grabbing the wrong one but I did go to the end of the log file and worked up to the end of the previous one (or so I thought). I will try again and post.
            Thank you

Just looked at my Nero HIstory log and it looks the same as what I reported. Not sure what's going on. I tried the other method but I don't have an Application Data folder. Anyone?

As a rule for me and other told me the same except for here, Nero can be a pain. I've had all kinds of problems with Nero and others told me the same. I remember when I first used it years ago, the per centage bar indicating the burning moved up and so did the buffers and nothing burnt to a disc and others told me the same. I also remember when Nero refused to allow me to add more data on a disc that I had already burnt to. Meaning, when I wanted to add more data, I was supposed to see through Nero what was currantly on a disc that I burnt before except it was supposed to be greyed out and the greyed out indicated what is currantly on a disc. I got an indication that the disc was blank and I knew it wasn't. I took a chance and the stupid Nero erased some of my data behind my back when my new data overwrote the previous lot. I had others telling me the same thing. I prefer to burn with Roxio and I've had no problems with that ever. I burn my home movies with IMG Burn because IMG Burn has a better stable performance.

Looks like I am one of the lucky ones that has an injured Nero. It is odd that the Nero History log says the last update was 3-18-09 (before I click to open the Notepad) but the most current date on the log is 1-22-09. I haven't had it that long. I can still use it but dvd's will take a long time to burn. I'll check into Roxio. Thanks for the info

Did you fix the DMA/PIO problem? Since running the steps, have you made sure that you now have DMA on? As long as it reverts back to PIO, any and all programs will take a long time to transfer data. I am guessing, since you said you read and went through the steps that you actually removed the channel and re-booted the computer?

Also I believe ImgBurn to be superior to any of the above mentioned programs. Try it, once you get your DMA set correctly.

I never got the Secondary IDE Channel to save. I will keep trying though. Thanks for the recommendation.

Okay, the linked helped but...on the Secondary IDE Channel Device 1 still won't save. Transfer Mode and Current Transfer Mode are still PIO Only. I have manually changed the dropdown, (the Current Transfer Mode is not editable) restarted and nothing. I've tried this three times in a row. Primary IDE Channel is perfect.
