Sony DVD player- S Master

Hi

I have aproblem with a Sony DVD player.

When i put the dvd, it comes up saying loading, after few minutes comes up with cannot read.

Pls give some suggestions

If a store bought or home made dvd- clean & retry
If homemade- is it on good media? Like verbatium? Was it burned at a slow speed like 8x, 4x, or slower?
Can it play on a computer vs stand alone player? If so, reburn at a slow speed on different media brand or with the + r vs - r
