capture HD SDI to MPEG2

Hello my fellow enthusiasts, i've been banging my head about capturing HD video from SDI (Sony X3 camera) into a good compressed format like MPEG, but i couldnt find nothing really stable and without complication.

If any of you has any experience with this i'll love to hear about please

I'd rather capture to something uncompressed, then edit and THEN save/render/convert to MPEG-2 or any format you prefer.
