Yes it sounds like your Benq optical drive is bricked. Isn't there a winflash type application, that you can use to read and program the flash ram memory firmware. Usually the flash memory chip will not scramble firmware like that and lock you out of chip. It can be fixed, but it is very complicated., and have to have an eprom programmer to reprogram the flash. The flash chip has to be removed from the drive pcb(printed circuit board) and reprogrammed out of circuit. Some times you can get lucky and be able to program the flash chip.

the benq are last forever, last year I lost 1655 now a 1640 which is not bad at all consider all the burns I made.

Nice to see you still around Chewy( the 1620 still around the house somewhere )

It's got to have at least 1000 burns by now, my benq 1650's(saved for newer disks) tray keeps sticking from not being used enough.

The 1620 doesn't see the newer mid codes to allow 8X burning.

Look for BQFlasher and try to flash a bin file to your drive..it may work..
                You raise the blade,
                You make the change,
You rearange me till I'm sane.
You lock the door, throw away
                the key,
                There's someone in my head
                and it's not me.

I may try it later, thanks for now I just swap it from an old 1640 from the other computer, It work fine for now.

1640 could last for few thousands, 1655 just over 1000
