Downloaded Divx avi file - how do I encode to burn a DVD?

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but I can't find it. I have just downloaded a Divx .avi file, a movie and I want to encode it so that I can then burn it onto a DVD. When I use TPMGEnc, the file is far too big for a single DVD - do I have to split it in two or???????

Any help you can give me would be very much appreciated.

you encode an avi into mpeg-2 and it´s to big for a DVD???
are you shoure you mean dvd or do you mean cd-r???

if you meant DVD you should give us some more info´s!
wich bitrate did you use, wich resolution...............

if you used cd it´s not a wonder that you have to splitt it... you can use tmpeg, vdtool.... for this....

Divx encoding

Thanks for your help, I'm definitely using a DVD-R. When I go through the TMPGEnc project wizard, screen 1/5 and I select DVD-Pal.
Screen 2/5 and select the .avi file (the film is Oceans 11 in Divx so nothing out of the ordinary)
Screen 3/5 the only thing i change is to full screen (keep aspect ratio)
Its at the Bitrate setting screen where I come unstuck as the automatic estimated file size is about 450% of a DVD disc space - it has a very high bit rate (I'm at work right now, so don't know exactly) and even reducing to the minimum 2000 bit rate (which is as low as I can take it), the disc space required is still 253%. This is where I stop and need help!!

I now have the avi file spec that I'm trying encode into Mpeg2

w544 h224
Brate 87kbps
Audio mp3
Frame rate 29fps
Data rate 103kbps
Video sample size 24 bit
Compression Divx Codec

When I reduce the bit rate of the encoder to 2000 average video rate, the file size is 14720MB and takes 190.59% of a 4.7Gb DVDr

Any help anyone could give me would be very gratefully received
