mpeg-1 playback problem

I've been having the following problem lately:

On playback of mpeg-1 files the action suddently stutters and jerks for several seconds. It looks like frames are dropped to keep the sound synced, because the sound remains synced during the entire playback.

I own an AMD 1600+ XP cpu, and having monitored cpu usage during these "lags" it get's no higher than 40-45%

I have the Asus GF2 GTS PRO gfx card, and have recently installed the Nvidia driver 40.72. That's the only change to my system. After that moment, the symptom seemed to occur, but how can a driver update be the cause of this?

I run Windows 2000 pro, fully upgraded and patched.

I get the sympton in PowerDVD deluxe 4.0, Windows Media Player, and Zoomplayer (all latest versions)

Any clues will be greatly appreciated =)

Try uninstalling the update?

You may want to try WMP 6.4 or BSPLAYER.

Check that Hardware Acceleration is enabled under the Advanced Display properties.

could it be the mpeg-1 codec or whatever?

The CPU usage should not be that high for an MPEG-1 file playback, esp. on an XP 1600+.

Have you changed anything else apart from the driver? I am with you on the driver being unlikely to cause this, but it never hurts to change back to the older driver that you were using prior to the problem.

how high cpu usage would you say is normal usage for playback of mpeg-1 in vcd quality.

im gonna do a 3dmark2001 test also.

It should not be high, for certain. I can't give you the number now since my CPU is currently being heavily used (it's at 100% max).

i got 4426 3dmarks in 3dmark2001, seems ok
i deinstalled the nimo codec pack, and installed build 8. now i cant watch any videos. comes up with some weird error heh. guess its just time to format =)

AVoid installing hte NIMO CODEC PACK at all. Instead try the TSUNAMI CODEC PACK, prior to a final format

The Tsunami seemed to do the trick, although it was hard to find. I haven't experienced any hickups yet (only tested one vcd).

Also the CPU usage is now in the 5-15% range (15% when theres complete scene change)

I guess Nimo wasn't up tp the challenge?

No. I'm sure it's one of the codecs that you had Nimo install that started the problem. I've not had any problems with either pack, although the Tsunami is currently more up-to-date than the Nimo.
