Well, which program are you talking about? A good free program to watch avi movies is "Tha Playa". But since you have windows xp, you can watch the movies that you download in Windows Media Player. But to make sure that you can play the videos get "Nimo Codec Pack"-> it will install for you all the codecs you need to watch movies. Here'e the link: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html
Let me know if you need more assistance

      DivX codec.
WMP 6.4 (Run mplayer2.exe from the Run command) or many other players.

Make sure to make a backup of your system before doing that, either using PowerQuest DriveImage or Norton Ghost. In my experience media player 9 is buggy as hell, will mess up your system, and cannot be uninstalled. On top of that I don't know any usefull features in wmp9 that you can't get with other players, and I can think of at least one essential feature that is missing in wmp9.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

Windows MP 9 series might be a bit buggy (depending on systems), but before installation it asks you if you would like to create a system-restore point, which is recommended and will help you get back your older version if you dont like the new one.

I however am satisfied with 9 series
