    No sound

When I play some avi movies they don't have sound. I've checked and it with gspot tfo's codec finder and it says that I don't have the ac3-digital codec installed.

I've downloaded nimo and installed it and uninstalled it then reinstalled it and it still won't recognize the ac3 codec. I've downloaded and installed a couple of other ac3 codecs and they don't work either.

I've tried viewing with the divx player, media player, bsplayer, all have no sound just with two avi movies. Other avi movies work fine, it's just the ones that need the ac3 codec.

I have a new Dell running XP. What's wrong?

    Anyone have any ideas?

        My pleasure ;>}

Now, if you'd like to have Windows Media Player (and most other players, as well) play these same files properly, download and run DVD Genie. Click on the "WinDVD" tab, click on "More" and select "Register filters with Windows". Then reboot your machine and try playing one of the "problem files" using Windows media Player.

        Let us know of your success ;>}

Ok, I got the genie and when I try to register it says:

ERROR: One or more WinDVD Directshow components are missing

Now what should I do? And you're right the movies only play in windvd, not any other players.

"ERROR: One or more WinDVD Directshow components are missing"

Do you have a full-blown, commercial version of WinDVD installed, or a demo version (or, perhaps, a "warez" version)?

Maybe I don't, I'm doing another search now. This is what it says.

              BSPlayer version 0.85 (C) 2000-2002 BST
              Free for non-commercial use

I'm sorry, I don't understand - What does BS Player have to do with whether you've got a full version of WinDVD?

I have the "real" windvd now. The other said it was, but I guess it was just a souped up bsplayer.

Any how I did what you said, with the dvdgenie but:

Gee, you're not going to believe this. I guess the "sound" I was hearing is just the music. I can't hear any of the speaking.

Would this be just a setting? (i hope) or a missing codec? Or, a crappy dell?

Since you're dealing with a file you've downloaded (and not one that you've created), I can only speculate that it was created with a music soundtrack as the primary (if not the ONLY) audiostream.

If you wish to pursue this any further, I'd suggest that you download and install the Mprgan Stream Switcher, reboot your machine and play the .AVI under Windows Media Player (NOT fullscreen). While the video is playing, select "Properties", "Advanced" and doubleclick on "Morgan Stream Switcher". Then click on "Switch" and "Okay". If there's a second audiostream (presumably voice), you should now hear it.

Perhaps other posters have additional ideas...

I did what you said. Got morgan, installed, rebooted, opened windows media player, started an avi file and when I choose properties, there isn't an advanced button or tab.

Is there anything I left out?

                      Sorry for all the trouble.

Install and use Windows Media Player v.6.4 (From your desktop, click on the "Start" button, select "Run" and type MPLAYER2.EXE)...

Well, the mixer isn't there to choose. These are whats listed:

                          AC3 filter
                          Default directsound device
                          divx decoder filter
                          subtitle mixer
                          video renderer

I did a search and this is where the morgan switch is:

                          C:\Program Files\Morgan\mmswitch

does it need to go somewhere else?

You have to REGISTER (with Windows) the Morgan filter as follows:

                            "Start"

                            "Run"

                            Type "regsvr32 /u C:\Program Files\Morgan\mmswitch.ax",

                            [enter]

                            [reboot]

(DO NOT type ANY quotation marks. Be cognizant of the space both before and after "/u".)

I get an error msg. LoadLibrary("C:\Program") failed - The specified module could not be found.

I copied and pasted it just as you wrote it. (without quotes)

These are the other places I found it.

                              C:\Documents and Settings\Mom\Desktop 67KB (app)12/16/02
                              C:\Program Files\DivX Total Pack 55KB (ax file)4/1/01
                              C:\Program Files\Morgan (file folder)
                              C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch 12KB (pf file)
                              C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 51KB (AX File)
                              C:\Program Files\Morgan\mmswitch 51KB (AX File)

I am so sorry, I don't understand any of this.
