Can i Put downloaded movies on to a dvd-r with my dvd burner

i just got a dvd burner but i do not know how to burn downloaded movies on to a dvd-r so that i can watch them on a dvd player. the movies are from kazaa and they are avi, do i need to change the file type or not and if so how would i. thanks a lot
