    IFO files- convert?

I'm a beginner at burning DVD's, and just used the preloaded "Click to DVD" software on my Sony Vaio to make a few DVD's from my old VHS-C tapes through Sony MiniDV camcorder. Each of my 4.7 gig DVD-RW's holds ca. 1.5 hrs of recording this way. I found the files generated were IFO, VOB and BUP which play fine on Windows media player and my TV's DVD player, and video quality seemed good. I was also happy with the amount of data I could load onto each DVD.
However when I tried to bring the IFO files into Pinnacle Studio 8 or other video editing software to manipulate them, couldn't import them.
Capturing video directly into Studio 8, you can get more common output files generated (AVI, MPEG etc) but AVI or DV generated bulky files while MPEG seemed lto produce lower quality video.
    - what are your recomendations? What's best file format for
home video DVD's- AVI? Do you recommend sticking with
Studio like software or PowerDVD or WinDVD?
    - how do I best recover the IFO files into a manipulable format?
Use conversion program to convert them?
    - Pinnacle claims about 1 hr video per 13 Gig stored- is this what
    you think reasonable?
