the max capacity of an 80 min CD disc is 700MB. So how come DVDx creates an 800MB MPEG when 80 min option is selected, and a 740MB MPEG when 74 min option is selected. Neither can be cut to a 700MB CD because they are oversized. My actual movie is about 1000MB total. Is it possible to get DVDx to split the movie in half giving me about 500MB for each MPEG? I saw a similar post where you recommended getting NERO Ahead (for $50) and selecting "overburn" option. Wouldn't this decrease the quality of the CD?

OK...how do I get it to burn. Initially I used VCDEasy v1.1.4 to set up my CD burner (MAT****A, UJDA 730 DVD/CDRW 1.00) and I get the message "predicted size larger than chosen media", and it shuts the burn process down. How do I get the 800MB file to burn on the 700MB CD? How do I build a MPEG1/2 (if there is such a thing)? Is DVDx's inability to split a movie into less than 700MB MPEGs a fatal flaw?Comment

If you requested DVDx to create MPEG1-VideoCDs, they should fit (without overburn. VideoCDs are based on time (just like audio CDs), not Megabytes.
In order to burn with NERO, simply select the "VideoCD" icon and it should allow you to burn the file(s)...Comment

thanx for all posts. UncasMS...your guide for NTSC products still under construction...will look at it with interest when you complete it. gs0666...loved your suggestion and downloaded free version of TMPGenc and was able to convert 2 large AVIs to MEGs and free up 5 Gigs on my C drive in less than 30 minutes. Great Product!!! But when i went to convert a ripped DVD file it told me it doesn't recognize .ifo or .vob files...so for making a movie it's useless. Perhaps the pay version will allow this? In the meantime I downloaded the new DVDx 2.1 version and found it does have provisions to cut a 74min Iso Data CD and gave me a split at 650 Megs...but the quality's poor. I then ran out to 3 computer stores searching for VCD media, until I ran across a guy who said (as the other posters have said) that a video disc runs off time, not Megs. "I just set my Ahead for VCD and I have no problems." Am checking my Japanese burner to see if it will cut a Video CD...if not, I guess I'll have to break down and buy Nero.Comment

Thanx gs0666...downloaded the plugin and TMPGenc recognized the .vob files (for the video source...not for the audio source, however). I cut an MPG anyway and got a super clear/crisp (albeit soundless) mpg session. Here's what I have: Smart Ripper leaves me an .Ifo file and 5 .vob sessions. With DVDx I click File/Open Ifo and then browse to find the .ifo file and set it as my source. I then set my settings and hit go, and DVDx strings the .vob sessions together to give me a complete movie in .mpg format which it automatically cuts at the appropriate point to fit on a VCD. Doing it your way would leave me with 5 mpgs which I'd have to merge...and then I'd have to figure out where to cut the movie to get it to fit. I have to admit, the quality of the TMPGenc video was far superior to what I've seen, so far, from DVDx...so I'm going to read up on your product. But I believe the key is to capture that .ifo file which pulls everything together...and which TMPGenc says it doesn't support. Thanx again for your help...and if I'm wrong in my assumption please correct me. I liked what I saw.Comment

"Doing it your way would leave me with 5 mpgs which I'd have to merge...and then I'd have to figure out where to cut the movie to get it to fit."
Disable filesplitting in Smartripper, and you would have one huge .vob.
If you enable Stream Processing in Smartripper, you can extract the movietrack(.m2v) and the audiotrack(.ac3).Then load them both in TMPGEnc.Comment

sorry it's taken so long to get back...my computer a tad slow with this many gigs on it. I set the adjustments on SmartRipper and voila...1 large .vop file. I then loaded it...but audio wouldn't take .vop as source...but since it was late Saturday night I cut it anyway and went to bed. Next morning I had a clear/crisp soundless movie (mpg1 set to 640X480). Encouraged, I deleted the mpg and found AC3decgui on the Smart Ripper site and fed my .vop file in to get a wave. I then just used the wizard to cut a vcd (Mpg1 set to NTSC specs- 352X240). The video was good, but not as sharp as the earlier 640X480 image. The audio was way out of sync. And even though I had set it for an 80 min VCD, and the progress report gave the indication of where it would cut, I still wound up with 1 large (1.2GB) Mpg. I'm going to try to cut an Mpg2 tonight (each cut takes 7 hrs). Any hints on the sync problem? If I designate higher resolution (640X480) will it play on a DVD? And if 640X480 is merely size...not resolution...how come my first cut was so clear? Many thanx for your expertise gs0666Comment

using ac3decgui for ripping audio. when .ac3 selected it automatically sets for PCM 44,100kHz output. Hand selected options this time...set for highest quality video, selected NSTC VCD and load that template under "Load". Ran program last night and video quality vastly improved...but still have voice sync problem. Looking at my settings this morning I found in "environment" under "audio engines" "low quality" was checked. Perhaps I should check "high quality" for next run...there's also a possibility to "use external program". Checking under the "settings" tab no source ranges had been checked. Checking under "load" tab VideoCD (NTSC) template had definitely been loaded. Any ideas?Comment
