    (smr) ...what the heck?

I just downloaded a video with .avi extension and the prefix (smr). I went nuts trying to see or hear it but no luck. I have been reading on the internet and found that I needed some kind of codecs. I just downloaded all smr codecs I've found and tried but no luck at all.

    So, what's missing?

    My specs:

    Windows XP sp1
    Windows Media Player v. 9.00.00.2980
    PIII@1.2 / 512 RAM
    GeForce 2 Go 32Mb

Thanks guys, NICE FORUM BY THE WAY.

SMR is a group which releases movies in avi format that are in the theaters. They usually do good rips, however sometimes foolish idiots renames fake files with an (smr) prefix to make the movie look like its real.

Since you downloaded the smr codec, and the movie still doesnt play, im guessing its a fake file. But just to be sure, get VirtualDub, and in it select File-> Open video file. Then click File-> File Information and post everything you see (or a screenshot).
Did you know you can SEARCH the forum? Fixes common problems too:

      I think I screwed it...

I downloaded virtualdub but wen I started it, it told me that it detected angelposion ant that it could make my system a mess.

I installed it last night and read about it this mornig, so I "uninstalled" it, but virtualdub tells it still is there. What do I do now?

BTW, I just get the same black screen when tryign to play the file in virtualdub.

      Thanks.

Sorry I didn't understand what you were asking until now ...

        Here is what it says:

        Video Stream
        Frame size 352X288, 3.000fps (333333us)
        # of frames (time) 12335 (1:08:31)
        Decompressor: Uncompressed RGB1
        Number of key frames: 12335
        Min/avg/max/totak key frame size: 12672/12672/12672(152646K)
Min/avg/max/totak delta frame size: (no delta frames)

There was nothin in audio stream.

It seems that it is a fake file, what made me feel scared now is that angelpotion thing, is there a way I can clean my PC? or whould I reinstall Windows XP?

        Thanks for any advice.

          1) Yes, based on the information you've posted from within VirtualDub , the file is a fake

          2) I don't think you should concern yourself with the AngelPotion codec residing on your system (It's just a modification of the DivX v.3.11alpha codec) - Just don't use it for anything...

            Thanks setarip.

How can I make sure I won't use it for anything? I uninstalled the software but the codec seems to be still there. So how do I know I will or won't use it?

            Thanks again.

Just don't select that codec for anything - essentially, simply forget about it being on your system.

              "Thanks setarip."

              My pleasure ;>}

I'm sorry for the next STUPID question but I won't feel bad since I'm posting in the junior and newbies forum. hehehe

I never selec a kind of codec I want to use. I just click on files that I want to play and voila! So I gues I'm missing some big stuff.
Do you use/recommend a good media player? How/where do you selec what kind of codec you use or don't.

                Thank you masters!

                  If you're merely playing back files, there's even less about which to be concerned - just "fawgeddaboudit" ;>}

(The only "stupid" question is the one you DON'T ask)
