virtualdub / tmpgenc or avi file problem

I have downloaded a few files and have noticed that when they go through virtualdub or vdubmod the video rendering rate drops to zero and nothing happens for a few seconds. The file then continues on as normal after this. When you try to then encode this file through TMPGenc the video freezes during ecoding although the audio continues. The MPEG2 file produced has the same problem ie if you were watching it after a point you would not see a moving picture but would hear the audio.
This has happened for a few files now. I even tried downloading the same files again but it still happens, although not neccessarily at the same part of the film.
Has anyone seen this before and know how to fix it or would you assume that the files are corrupt.
The version of VDUBMOD and virtualdub and TMPGenc that I am using have all worked for other files. It is only certain ones.

    Thanks for your help
