some versions of virtualdub will accept asf as input

selecting an avi codec of your choice could be the way to go

    not loosing quality?
since asf quality is very poor anyway, why worry about additional loss

which part is it you dont understand?

i should need more specific questions.

maybe using a search engine should be a good start.

          Ok....
          What is virtualdub?
          Where is this found?
          How is it run?
How do I select a avi codec of my choice?
How many choices do I have?
          Which is best?
          Why?
          Why would I lose quality?
I didn't even know the quality was bad?
I can convert through ASV tools, but I lose the picture. I need to re-encode....know how to do that?
What is this additional loss you speak of? What did I lose to begin with?

As I said, I am very new to this and know very little about downloads and playback issues.
Thanks again for all your time.

VirtualDub is a software tool you can pick up on this site. If you go to the "Beginners start here" thread you can find tutorials on how to use it. I believe browsing through "Nicky's FAQ" you will find answers to every question you asked...and those you didn't ask.
