i have a problem with virtual dub also. i usse virtual dub to rencode my avi files into simple profile mpeg4 (i beileve this is avi - though if it isnt i know virtual dub is capable of this as i found the software as it came with my archos jukebox multimedia) i am trying to take some of my to large to veiw on my archos movie files and convert them with virtual dub, yet every time i do, and im pretty sure i am doing it right, all that comes out in the end is a file that's file type is file. now on my computers i can play this file by selecting open with but on my archos (the entire reason for using virtual to conver these files) it simply shows up as a question mark and will not play. at one time i though i was missing a step that maybe i was supposed to make to files with each conversion and one was an avi, yet if this is the case i havent found out how yet. so any one know how to use virtual dub to convert to the archos?>

it is the archos jukebox multimedia, which by the way has the worst technical support of any product i have ever bought. though it is a great product. i only hate belkin worse. any way back to the issue at hand. it uses it's own OS and is supposed to play simple profile mpeg 4's and maybe it will if i can ever convert an avi into a simple profile mpeg4Comment

well thank you for trying. do you however know how to make a file from virtual dub into a smaller reduced file size? and the archos is a great product but dont but it unless you areverry good with tech and then youll be suprised at not knowing everything you thought you knew. there is no tech support from archos at all they are the very worst company i have dealt with in all of my many products i have bought. most of my time is devoted to divx so i am always around this and always learning. so if you know that answer let me know if not oh welll i will figure it out eventually. i am about to have six months of free time or more off the net any way in a ****ty assed dessert so maybe ill figure it out there.Comment

solution sorry it's late
rename the file from filename to filename.avi then copy them to your device and they'll play. I know I have a av140 and it works.

Here's How!!
I use the Archos Jukebox sucessfully with VirtualDubMod. I load the file I want to transfer to the Jukebox into Virtualdubmod, then cut out any unwanted parts. Then choose Video, Compression, and here I use DivX 5.0.3 (or something like that.) Check the manual for other acceptable compression schemes. Then click on Streams, then Stream List. Right-click on the audio stream gray area and select Compression. Now choose Mpeg Layer 3, and make your choice from the right. Now it is time to save this to your hard drive. Choose File, Save As AVI, and enter the file location and name. It will now run through and compress the video and audio. When done, simply transfer to the jukebox using the USB cable provided. Also don't forget that your screen resolution of the source video cannot be greater than 352 X 288. If it is, I believe that the program TmpgEnc can convert that for you. Also, I found that after about 20 minutes or so, the audio and video tend to become Un-synced. So I chop movies into 20-30 minute segments. Ask if you have any other questions.Comment
