from dv camcorder to divx

what program do you suggest to covert my avi from my dv camcorder to divx?

First of all DivX is not a format just incase you were confused with that.

Open your AVI in VirtualDub
Set Audio to Direct Stream Copy
Set Video to Full Processing Mode
Under the video drop down menu click compression and choose your codec you would like to use.
Under the File drop down menu click on Save as AVI

If you want to compress the audio also
Set Audio to Full Processing mode
Click on compression choose your codec before you save it

opening the file VirtualDub says filter unknown. The file is an dv avi file of my camcorder and i want to encode it with divx to fit on one cd. What is wrong? and when i want to use divx what encoding do i have to use.... mpeg4layer or????, to give the best result

Open your file in VDub under video select Filters and see if anything is there. There shouldn't be
