Extracting audio from a video file

    Hello,

I have a video file here (in .mpeg) and I would like to extract the sound from it and possibly save it as a MP3 file. This video file has two layers of sound (i.e. background and foreground, voice and music) and I would like to have the ability to choose which one to extract. Also does it matter how the video file was encoded or can I do this to any video file? I don't have any clue to what type of software does this, so any you have in mind would be great. Thanks.

Although not impossible, it would be very unusual to have an MPEG file with two audiostreams. Are you able to select which one you hear, or are you just assuming the background and foreground are in separate streams?

You can use an audio editing program such as GoldWave or CoolEdit to extract the audio. Simply "drag and drop" the MPEG file onto the already opened editor. )It will automatically extract the audiostream.) Then simply select the audio format in which you'd prefer to save it...

(You could also use the freeware version of TMPGEnc to perform this task)

Thanks for your help. I am just assuming that it has two layers of audio. I didn't know it depended upon the video type. I also have a .avi file to that I would like to do this to. Thanks again, I will check out those programs.

So one of those programs will give me the option to extract a certain audio layer or does it depend on the how the video was encoded?

(When I say audio layer I mean like having people talking at the same time music is playing the the background. I would like to split these apart, if even possible.)

EDIT: I was looking around and I think the term for what i'm trying to do is called demulitplexing.
