    view installed codecs

Hi there. Does anyone know who I can see a list of all installed codecs on my computer. I was trying to open an .avi file in windows media player and was prompted to download the necessary codec from the microsoft website. Rather stupidly, I accepted. And I've been getting some ambigious error messages from media player and explorer.

I figure if I can find where they were installed, I can remove them.

    Thanks in advance.

Open your Control Panel and select "Multimedia" - click on the "Devices" tab and then select "Video Compression Codecs" to see all installed video codecs - "Audio Compression Codecs" to see all installed audio codecs...

Okay, so I can view the installed codecs, however I have no idea which ones would have been downloaded from microsoft. Can I arrange them by date somehow? Will I seriously screw things up if I start removing the wrong ones? I was mistaken, it was actually a .wmv file and not a .avi. Any idea which codec I need to remove? One of these perhaps:

divx MPEG4 video codec (fast motion)
divx MPEG4 video codec (fast motion)
              cinepak [TM]
              msh261 [M261]
              msh262 [M263]
              Indeo [TM] R3.1
              Indeo [TM] R3.2
              Indeo video 5.04
              RLE
              Video 1

Probably the ones that start with ms, eh?

There's a bunch of audio codecs as well, maybe it's one of those.

Other than the two DivX items (both part of the DivX v.3.11alpha codec), all of the codecs you've listed are standard codecs that are installed as part of the Windows installation - and would not have been subsequently downloaded...
