use dvd2svcd for the creation. superb quality, good speed and you can quickly get the hang of it.

You should be advised, however, that far more standalone DVD players can play VCDs than can play SVCDs.

If you make SVCDs and then discover that your standalone will only play VCDs, you can use TMPGEnc as follows:

File>>MPEGTools>>Simple Multiplex

Load your SVCD file

Change mode to "MPEG1-VideoCD"

Enter a new filename in the "Output" box

Press the "Run" radio button

(Do not be concerned about any "Buffer underflow" messages you may see)

Burn (DO NOT ask burning software, such as NERO to CONVERT to VCD, rather merely BURN as a VCD)

Yes, VCD is a smaller filesize than SVCD...

SVCDs are better than VCDs because of their relatively higher resolution (480x480 as opposed to VCD's 352x240). However, this means that SVCDs require more space than VCDs for a given play length. Normally you will only be able to fit 40-50 minutes of film on a SVCD, compared to 60-74 minutes on VCDs.

As for compatibility,
VCDs use MPEG-1 compression (commonly supported)
SVCDs use MPEG-2 compression (not as commonly-supported as MPEG-1)

Anyway, isn't MPEG2's compression-rate way more advanced than MPEG1's, thus making the file size smaller?

You are confusing QUALITY of compression with Filesize.

MPEG-2/MPEG-2SVCD yields better quality images than MPEG-1/VCD (which requires MORE filesize) - BUT compliant SVCDs use a video bitrate of 2,520Kbps (which also requires MORE filesize), while compliant VCDs use a video bitrate of only 1,150Kbps. Additionally, as pointed out by Enchanter, compliant SVCDs are of higher resolution (480x480 NTSC, 480x576 PAL) than compliant VCDs (352x240 NTSC, 352x288 PAL). This also results in MORE filesize for SVCD...

Right! Good thing I asked you guys about this. I was about to throw out the two VCDs I burned (two part movie - 400MB each), hoping to get the two parts in one single SVCD.

I can get a high quality 60minute vcdbut anything more than 60 minutes will have less quality. My dvd player can't play svcd, so vcd is good enough. svcd can only get 35 minutes of high quality.

i wouldnt agree to that

i have converted black hawk down to only two cds which means 60+ min per cd and i definitely wouldnt consider the svcd-quality anything but very good.
