Problems with Nero

I am trying to convert an AVI file to VCD using Nero, but when it burns I only get 10 seconds of video. But if I do it again, it burns the entire file. Why do I have to burn it twice for it to work? Any ideas?

I experienced the same problem when I did use
the conversion feature of nero.

I also did use it only to compare results using Nero
Cinema Craft or Tmpeg.

Nero produces acceptable results but the other two
programs do better.
(You might also be inclined to give a try).

If you like to stick to Nero:

1. update to the newest version of nero 5.5

2. make sure that you choose the DAO writing mode
or that you finalize your disk before starting the burn process

3. If that still does not fix your prob. then "burn" it to an image
first choosing Image recorder in the recorder pull down menue.
check that image by maybe using Daemon tools 333
or Alcohol 120%. If ok burn image to disk.

nero is an excellent "burner" but it´s not wuite a good "author".. you should try authoring with other tools like ulead dvd movie factory or DVDLab...
and then, burn the final project with nero...

don´t you think that your software suggestion is a little overdone
for a little avi to mpeg conversion???

tmpeg and vcdeasy would also do a fine job and can be obtained for little or no money?? this of course is my humble opinion!!!

You may want to try the following procedures instead, to create a VCD:

1) Load .AVI file into TMPGEnc
2) Set to "System Video and Audio" (lower right side)
3) Click on "Setting" radio button
4) Click on "System" tab, change mode to "MPEG1-VideoCD" (from default of "MPEG1")
5) Click on "Advanced" tab, change "Video arrange method" to "Center (Custom Size"), change dimensions to 352x288 or 352x240
6) Change "Source aspect ratio" to either "4:3 525 line (NTSC 704x480)", "4:3 525 line (NTSC)", or "16:9 525 line (NTSC)" - If you're in the PAL world choose either of the two similar PAL settings instead
7) Under the "Video" tab, change the dimensions to 352x288 or 352x240 (Note: "Video" tab mode of "MPEG1" is okay) - set "Motion Search Precision" to "Normal Quality". Change the "Aspect Ratio" to match, as closely as possible, the "Source Aspect Ratio" you set under the "Advanced" tab.
8) Change "Rate Control Mode" to "Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR)" and "Bitrate" to "1,150"
9) Under the "Audio" tab, set to 44,100 224Kbps
10) Press "Start"

(Or, instead of the steps 1)-10) above, you could attempt to use TMPGEnc's VCD "wizard"/template)

Note that if your video runs longer than 70-80 minutes, you'll have to subsequently split your VCD-MPG file in two. This too can be easily and precisely accomplished using TMPGEnc. Under the "Files" dropdown menu, click on "MPEG Tools" and select the "Merge & Cut" tab. Once again, make sure to change the mode to "MPEG1-Video CD". Load your file and enter a new (.MPG) name in the "Output file" box. Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL file's name in the window, which will bring you to the cutting area. Select your desired start and end points for the first half, click on "Okay" which will bring you back to the first window and generate (in a sequence of three automated steps) the first new file. To create the second new file, repeat the steps starting with "Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL..." (be extra patient with the second half, as the program has to do more seeking to establish the beginning of the new file).

Use a burning program, such as NERO to burn your CD-R or R/W CD as a VCD (DON'T ask NERO to format the file as a VCD, since you've already accomplished this!)

(By the way, as far as I know, DVDLab can ONLY be used to generate DVDs)

Downloaded TMPEGnc. Not quite the sucess I had hoped for. I set all the settings as you stated in your post, but when I press start I get an error message that says "Can't load. "P3 package.dll" " I have no idea what that means or how to correct the problem. Please continue to help me.

It seems that you miss one of your libraries .
do a google search on this P3package.dll (without blanks)
and copy it to your folder Tmpeg or Tmpegplus where you did
install your tmpeg to.

this package normally should be installed with tmpeg plus.

of course you have to extract it with winrar.
sorry I had to compress but otherwise
it would not meet the postable filesize limit.

FINALLY GOT TMPEG TO WORK

I finally got TMpge to work. And it works great! I have not had any problems with Nero since I started encoding with TMpge. But I dnld'd a trial version from IMESH. It came with a serial number but it does not work.
Does any one have a serial number for or a key gen program that will work for Tmpge?

If you say that tmpeg works great so why don´t you download
the official version instead of some crap from a "friend".

the svcd encoding is limited to a trial. if you find it good spend the few bucks.

the vcd encoding is free with Tmpeg.

I would also NOT ask for Serials in this forum...

Touchy, Touchy

I did not mean to offend anyone, but the version I downloaded from the TMpge site(the free version)doesn't work. Even after you gave me the p3package. It still says cannot load p3package.dll. So I had to go online and get another version. Just looking for a way to keep it without having to come out of pocket.
