    Mpeg2cut

    Hi Everyone

I've ripped a dvd to hard disk and can happily see all the VOB files. I'm now using an application called MPEG2CUT to create a mpeg file which I hope to pick up in Pinnacle Studio to add transitions and effects.

However, when I save the file in MPEG2CUT, I can see it in windows explorer as type 'movie file (MPEG)' and it's associated with windows media player but Pinnacle Studio cannot see the file.

Funny, when I see the mpeg clip in WMA the damn picture is upside down. I wonder what went wrong!

Can someone suggest how I can get to see clips in Pinnacle Studio? What file type should I convert the VOBs into, using what software.

    Many thanks for your help..

    Welcome to the forum, PutJatda!!!

strange enough since studio 7 is able to read mpeg2
    files.

When saving the part of movie with mpeg2cutter did you save it with a proper extension (suffix) which would be mpg or mpeg in this case?

    somehing like moviepart.mpg

Hi Shiny, thanks for the welcome.

I had saved the file in the format you have indicated.
When using MPEG2CUT, I can see the scenes of the chosen Vob file. I then save it as <filename>.mpg
But the damn thing doesn't get picked up by Studio 8. Does calling the extension mpeg or mpeg-2 make any difference.
I had ripped the DVD using SmartRipper. Maybe I should try DVDDecrypter.

I am running on Windows 98SE.

I have also been using the mpeg-2 extension sometime
and have not been able to open it with any application.
so I doubt that it is a legal suffix at all.

Try the other alternative using the .mpg extension

since studio 7 is also able to read and recognize avi containers
but relies on header when analizing the file maybe the suffix avi also works???

make sure that your os really saves the suffix as you want it.

in case of doubt usethe force method which means using quotation marks in the filname when saving....

            example: "moviepart.mpg"

there are several freeware splitters in download. Chopperxp is specifically designed to split VOB's. MPEG2CUT will split them, too...but every once in a while a file made by one tool or another doesn't get read right by another piece of software, and performing a function using another tool gives you a workable file. It's nice to have alternatives.

                To PutJatda

As an alternative methodology, you might try using DVD Shrink v.3.0beta 5 (in the "Re-author" mode) to both cut the desired segment and create a full DVD "package" for it (.IFOs, .BUPs, .VOBs). This should assure the ability of your editing software to properly read the .VOB(s).

(Using the "Re-author" mode, you can also join sevral of these created .VOBs into one DVD "package", if desired)

I saved the file as Shiny suggested, ie "moviepart.mpg" (with the quote marks) and I could pick it up in Pinnacle Studio. By the way saving it as "moviepart, mpeg" didn't work). Thanks Shiny.

And thanks to all who replied.

Onto the next part. Basically, I'm going to end up with several mpeg files. They'll be musical clips, eg suppose I was compiling an Elvis Presley greatest hits DVD. I will end up with several mpeg files, each representing a song. Ideally I would like to join them up with a transition between each song and copy to DVD.

Can anyone suggest what software and methods I can use?
                  Many thanks!

Your Pinnacle Studio 8 has a storyboard. If the MPEG is different from the actual performance and doesn't contain the sound track demux the video stream out and feed it into the storyboard...then copy the audio stream from a CD and feed it into the the storyboard. The trick is getting the video timed to end with the audio. Make MPEG for each song...then later feed the song/mpgs in and add transitions and make a complete video. If Pinnacle's storyboard gives you a problem try a 30 day trial of ULead VS7...it'll do all this with ease.
