choppy video playback in fullscreen, Windows XP?!

I've just switched operating systems from Windows 98 to Windows XP and now find that when I attempt to play videos (mpeg and avi) in fullscreen mode the picture is unsufferably choppy. These same videos played fine in fullscreen under the previous operating system. I've tried different media players (Windows Media Player 8, 9, and 6.4) as well as searching for updated drivers on the Microsoft website for my NeoMagicAV display (on a Dell Inspiron 3500 laptop). Video acceleration is set to full and I've also tried changing my IDE setting. So far none of these changes has helped the playback problems -- can anyone suggest how I might get back to fluid video at fullscreen? Thanks.

    1) Lower your DESKTOP resolution (perhaps to 800x600, or lower)

    2) Lower your DESKTOP colordepth

    3) Turn off all unnecessary programs running in the background

By all means, use good ol' reliable Windows Media Player v.6.4 (which you apparently already know how to install)...

Reducing the color-depth from 24-bit to 16-bit is all it took. Thanks very much for your help!
