I have been burning to dvd with a program called nero vision express but the whole process takes like 3 to 4 hours to complete also i have a 2600+ athlon processor and this program runs the processor at 100% all the time it is burning the dvd. Most of the time i get good results but sometimes the sound an te picture are out of sync which is really annoying after waitin 4 hours. I have a 4x speed dvd+r writer. Can anyone suggest a different program that will burn dvd-video that may be a bit faster? i use this program as it encodes the .avi an divx files autmatically before burning to disc as thats the simplest i could find as i am new to all this. any suggestions for a confuddled lady?
this cant be right can it ?

I guess this is not a burning problem but a transcoding problem...
most out of sync problems are caused by the source avi,
when it contains audio of variable bitrates.....
best is that you check your avis before encoding using
gspot or virtualdub mod virtual dub mod also allows you to
reextract your audiofiles to an audioformat with constant bitrate..
your out of sync problems should seize to exist if you use the such fixed avi as a source then.....
the reason why it takes such a long time is that the encoding
process from avi to mpeg2 takes that long......
there are encoders out there that yield better results than the routines of nerovision express . Tmpeg enc is such a program , for instance.....
The fastest encoder nowadays is the Cinema Craft Encoder....
but this is not an easy to use program, though it is not so difficult either..... many tutorials on that can be found in the net....
you might be incliend to give a try.....
on here i include a little howto change VBR audiostream to a CBR stream
using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV
1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub) , ignore the message about VBR audio and hit NO....
2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"
3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode"
rightclick again on the audiostream, then in compression select
no compresion (PCM) then click on Demux and enter a filename with the wav suffix (e.g. terminator.wav) to save the audio.
4) After the audio has been saved open streamlist --> streams again and click on disable
5) Save with a new filename.
now you have a video and audiostream that should not create
any out of sync problems when transformed with nerovision
or Tmpegenc or CCE.... -
well thanks very much for your help .. i really appreciate it.. it all sounded like chinese to me but im gonna make a copy of your instructions and follow em step by step and see what happens lol fingers crossed heyComment

Hey Thingy_me_bob, do not despair! we're all newbies to start with and it is a helluva learning curve I know!
A couple of things I've picked up: TMPGEnc DVD Author for instance, encodes and makes a DVD directory on your hard drive which you can check out on a software (WinDVD, PowerDVD) player before burning.
The other, try a RW before commiting to a R - come to think of it, I haven't burned an R yet!This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!Comment

i think its about time someone wrote a book called the idiots guide to dvd burning lol coz i need an idiots guideComment

yep.... thats right ... don´t give up that early....bob
I ve also been a newbie to this video stuff some years ago
and we hadn´t all those beautiful now smothly working tools
back then... but I also have to admit that we also didn´t have such a codec mess.....
by the way.... sorry sfheath.....I have to correct something....
Tmpeg DVD Author is not for encoding to mpeg2 which is
compliant to DVD...it is just for the purpose of wrapping
your mpeg2 movies into vob files and creating a valid dvd
file structure as well ...
the tool for encoding to mpeg2 is called
TMPEG ENCODER.... it is a different program though the name sounds similar...
to thingy_me_bob: instead of Virtualdub MOD you can also
use virtual dub for a simple VBR mp3 concersion to wav.....
I only suggested virtual dub mod because it can also deal with
AC3 soundstreams and some other wrappers (containers) such as ogg.....
the audio tools of normal virtual dub can be found in the audio
dropdown menue....but the transorming process is quite analogical.....
good luckComment

nope i am seriously becoming more and more confused the more you tell me about lol i really do not know anything about this subject all i do at the minute is go into nervision express add video files press next a few times and wait 3-4 hours and hey presto a working dvd lol ... anything more than that and i am lost .. is there any like web sites that you could recomend that i can go read about some of this stuff .. and i need a web site that explains in simple english lol because this ......

if you encounter an errormessage please be good enough to
do a screenshot of it....and post it here or simply tipe in the errormesage into this forum
I did not mean to cofuse you and there is nothing wrong with your method...if it works fine....
those avis only have to be altered if they contain a variable bitrate
in the audio stream....
well to explain that more precisely.....lots of avis have a video stream compressed with divx or xvid or some similar codec
the audiostream is often an mp3 format so there are also two
different kind of mp3 audio streams: one is encoded with a
constant bitrate. it is mostly descripted as mp3 CBR (constant bit rate). this kind of streams will not give you any trouble when you transform them to Mpeg2 format (the videoformat a DVD needs)
the second kind is the bad boy. it is called mp3 VBR
(variable bit rate) ...most of the transforming programs (avi to DVD) have difficulties with this kind of mp3 .
an avifile that contains such a stream has to be fixed with virtual dub.....
here is another tip ther is a little program called Gspot....just get
it and then load your avi into it it tells you exactly if the avi has
a CBR or a VBR audiostream..... if it has a CBR stream use your method.....
if it has a a VBR stream do the following.....
1) Load your original .AVI into Virtual Dub
Ignore the the errormessage that tells you to rewrite the VBR
header with a CBR header and hit "NO"
2)Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy" in the video dropdown menue
3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode" (Virtual dub only!!! -For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Full Processing Mode")
From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and choose "No compression(PCM)" (Virtual dub only!!! - For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>rightclick on the listed audiostream and then select "Compression" and choose "No compression(PCM)")
4) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save WAV" (In VIrtualDubMOD, "Save WAV" is located under the "Streams" drodpown menu) (Enter a new filename with a ".WAV" extender).Click on "OK"
5) Then save the .AVI as a silent .AVIusing a new filename! (Virtual dub only - set "Audio" to "No audio" after you've saved the WAV file. - For VirtualDubMOD>"Streams>"Stream list">>click on the listed audiostream and then select "Disable").
I have included the procedures for virtualdub MOD also, in case you get virtual dub to work.
Now you have a video stream and a proper audio stream for the use with nerovision or tmpeg encoder or CCE......
the AC3 stream I have been talking of, is another audioformat
that can contain dolby surround sound . more and more people
are creating avis with that soundformat....
the articles section on www.divx-digest.com contain a lot of guides.... that you might read ... just to get a cling how things work.....Last edited by shiny#3; 7 Oct 2003, 10:16 PM.Comment

ok i downloaded gspot .. cant you tell i am a women i could actually find it (he he ) and i managed to download virtualdubmod which looks very good if only i could find my video files with it. Where it says add files i click that and when i go to the folder i have my video files stored it it shows it as there isnt any files in there .. ermm i know there is lol so why would it show the folder to be blank .. sorry to b a painComment

note that virtualdub was created to deal with avifiles mainly.....
so do the following.....run Virtualdub or virtualdub mod
refer to filedropdown menue hit "open videofile" ( NOT!!! via avisynth) a new window appears....then Browse to the folder where your avi file resides doubleclick on it.... e voila.... file is loaded....Comment
