How can I record CDs bigger than 740 Mb

I sometimes download files bigger than the normal limit of 740 Mb which I then want to make a CD copy of. Even when I try to use an 800 Mb blank disk to record on I can´t seem to get past the strict limit of 740Mb. My burner is a fairly new 52-24-52. Is there a program out there (aside from Nero which imposes the limit) which allows one to burn larger files?

    Thanks

    A couple of questions:
First, what kind of file format are you trying to use? Depending on what it is, it may be possoible to compress it to take less disk space. This will probably mean acquring a codec.
Secondly, are you trying to use a packet-writing mode? Formating a CD-R for packet writing takes up some space for the directory structure.
Another one; which version Nero are you using?
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

      Hi. Thanks for responding.

I am trying to make copies of movies which are in .avi or Divx or Xvid and are more than 760.

I don´t know anything about its packet writing mode, sorry.

I believe that I am using the latest version of Nero which I think is 5.5.1

Maybe there is another burner program which is more flexible?

I would suggest chopping them up onto 2 CD's if you plan to ever play them in older drives. There is a great guide on this here: http://nickyguides.digital-digest.co...-split-avi.htm

700 mb is what normal is , what capacity cdr ur using?
u can over burn 700 mx cdr's to max of 720, though it depends on brand to brand, but i find anything above that will curropt the data at the end.

otherthen that there are few cdr's available of 870 mb, i use them personaly they are actually of 700 mb if u burn them but what they offer is a overburn option upto 870 without any problems. these cdr's are sell by name melody 870 mb cdr.

so try overburning ur 800 mb cdrs too, just use simulation first as that will save ur cdr if any error occurs.
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

First thanks to everyone who is helping me. I appreciate it. This is a great forum to get information.

I will check out the option of cutting the movie file. I would like to do this as a last option because it seems a bit silly to have to make two discs: one with 740 Mb and the other for the extra 10-15 Mb that remains after cutting it. Still this may be the only option.

As to the comment by atifish, I have tried recording in Nero with special 800 Mb discs but Nero only recognizes the normal 740, so I can´t record larger files with Nero. Windows Media Player also only seems to recognize about 700 Mb on the 800 Mb in the disc. Maybe there is something weird with my installation of Windows XP that only allow a maximun of 700 Mb no matter what burner program I am using.

I´m not sure if the problem is my LG burner, Nero, or Windows. All three are
fairly new so I am not sure what the problem.

Also, I am curious, but why are there so many movie available in sizes more than 740 if it appears to be such a trick
            just to get them copied?

            thanks

ok let me clarify again, standard format of cdr is still 700 mb per disk. if u want to burn more or if ur cdr is 800 mb u have to use overburn option in nero to burn that much more.

also overburn only works at disk at once mode, try using simulation to see if u dont get any errors in end.

              hope this clarify .......

Can you tell me where is the overburn option in Nero? I have looked for it but not found it.

                Thanks

when u copy/ add ur file to compilation press burn the current compilation , there choose simulation and set write mode to disk at once.
now when u start burn it will popup msg that ur file is bigger then cd and give u option to either cancle or overburn. choose overburn. having simulation on will make sure ull wont get error at end.

option 1. split. you don't have to split 700/50, you can split 375/375 so that you are switching CDs about halfway through the movie. Spend some time and find a good split point that isn't mid-word.

option 2. burn CD in MODE2 which removes error correction and allows you 800 MB on a 700 MB cd by reducing overhead. unfortunately, you need another program to read the resulting DAT file (it's no longer your avi file). and your CD is more susceptible to data corruption. i can provide more info if you wish.

option 3. after doing 1 and 2 for a while, I now re-encode the movie with Dr. DivX down to 703 MB. Takes about 5 hours (overnight) and when you wake up you have a movie that you can fit on 1 CD and is imperceptibly more compressed.

Thank you everyone for helping me

Hi. Thanks for the help. Unfortuantely in the middle of all of this I have travelled to visit my parents for Christmas thus leaving my computer behind.

I will take up your advice when I get back in the second half of January.

                      Merry Christmas
