TMPGEnc is the way to go, but since you say you already used it -and didn't work- there must be something strange with the avi file
(i assume you used TMPGEnc the way it should and that isn't that difficult)

So in order for anyone to help you out you have to come up with a lot more info about the avi (both video and audio-properties for starters)

        To Hoolicool

I am a newbie to the movie industry. I too download movies from Morpheous, with not a lot of sucess. Try converting your files first to AVI, even though they are an AVI file. Use VirtualDub, you can also use filters on the file too. Once converted again to AVI, use TPGMnc to encode to MPEG-1. Once encoded burn to CD with nero 5.5.

If thats to much you can just use nero 5.5 to do the whole lot, however while it worked and created a VCD, the picture wasnt that good. Good luck though.

thanks for the advice guys. i will have a look at the files and fin the video/audio settings.

one thing i do remember is that the file didn't seem to match up with either the pal/ntsc requirements, i think it was 12.5 for video.

if you could help i'll dig out the exact details, thanks guys

The files from morpheous state that they are 12.500fps. This is actually PAL with half the frame rate, however you need to use virtual dub and change the fps rate under the video tab when encoding to mpeg. Change the rate to 25.000fps and you should have any problems.

even after using virtualdub tmpge could not open the file and it gave me this msg:

                  can not open or unsupported

i tried changing the fps to 25 using virtualdub but all it seemed to do was speed the avi up.

if i give you the information from the properties/detail panel of the file:

audio format: mpeg layer-3,56 kbit/s, 24,000 hz, stereo

                  video format: 352x288, 43196 frames, 12.000 frames/sec,
                  43kb/sec, unknown format

will i be able to convert this file to mpeg for burning? just to let you know it plays fine as an avi on media player etc.

                  WHAT TO DO NOW ??!!!

It sounds as if you and I are having the same problems.

I have been getting some great advice from "Setarip" and "Abdul".

If you right click on the avi in the windows explorer mode. It will give you the properties of the file. If you click on the last tab "preview" I bet it will say "Video not available cannot find "vids mp43" decompressor. I bet you cant play the file with Playa either.

This means that the computer cannot find the codecs to decompress the file. I was told by Abdul to download a program called AVIFourcc code changer.

This will change the codec for the file from fourcc to divx. Open the file and change the fourcc from mp43 to divx3 or divx, both will work.

Then load this "new" movie into VD and check to see if the problem is solved.

I take no credit if this works, the credit belongs to "setarip" and "abdul". I have yet to try it.

                    Good Luck.

                        ** update **

tried the avifourcc to change the file to divx. this just doesn't seem to make any difference.

does anyone have the time to take me through this? whatever i seem to try once i get to Tmpge it won't accept any of the files.

is there anyone who has yahoo/msn messenger who can take me through or is there anyone in th uk that i could call to get this sorted?

i'm beginning to tear my hair out now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not and expert but from what I have been reading, VCD's need to be at 29.97fps exactly in order for another stand alone DVD player to read it. (I'm in the USA if that makes a difference)

Sorry Buddy, I made a typo. When you go to aviforcecc, change the file to div3 or div4, not divx3 or divx. Trust me I had the same problem.

If you stick with VD, change the filerate to 29.97 or 25.000, then place the audio on full process, and the video on direct stream. Then on the video tab change the process rate to every 2nd frame. Preview and see what happens. This may take a while to get right, but the problems lie somewhere between the Video and Audio tabs. The worst prob I got was great sound, but no preview of the movie, if this happens change back to stream process on the video tab. I'll keep trying as well, as the settings seem to be different for every movie. Sometimes you have to leave it at 12.500 fps, but I dont know how this effects VCD quality. I heard you cant tell on your computer.

Then save file to AVI useing VD. If you've got it wrong then VD should spit it out. If not go to TMPGnc and change to MPEG.

Once in TMPGnc use the wizard and slow down the conversion rate to slowest. This should stop video flicker.

I've done all the above and it seems to work O.K. However I have yet to burn to disk. What movie are you trying? I've done this with a few, with mixed success. Maybe were stuck on the same one.

                            Can anyone else help us?

this may seem boring to most here but nothing that's been suggested has worked yet.

                              can anyone help me?
