    Best basic DVD authoring software?

Anyone have recommendations for software to create basic DVDs from home videos? I'm not doing much editing...just want to capture, create menus and burn. My DVD burner came with Sonic MyDVD and Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator 5 Basic. I thought MyDVD would be perfect, but it's having problems recognizing the media I'm using (Memorex DVD-R). Plus, I'm starting to learn from other threads that MyDVD is not very robust. I would try the Roxio (which was able to use and burn a DVD data disc to the same Memorex DVD-R), but the version I have doesn't include all of the features to allow me to make DVD movies. Any suggestions? Should I upgrade to Roxio 6? Upgrade to MyDVD 5? Nero? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

TMPGEnc DVD Author is well worth a look. It handles basic menus, editing and is available for a 30 day trial before you need to dip into the pocket
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!
