Nero hangs on 'checking disc' for dvd-r not dvd+r

I have an AMD XP2200+ chip on a Gigabyte 7VAXP board with a Pioneer DVD-R 106/A06 drive. The operating system is XP Pro and I think it is SP1 since I do most all windows updates. I am running Nero 6.0.0.0 and it hangs on the burn process. It says it caches the files then hangs when it says 'checking discs' and then it won't respond to shut down Nero. The computer still does other stuff so it's not the whole system hanging.

I have updated the firmware, uninstalled and reinstalled both Nero 5.5 and Nero 6.0 but nothing has helped.

I was able to burn DVD-R disc's but cannot now. The media I have and still use is Verbatim so it's 1x-2x speed. The +r media I use is also verbatim.

I have burnt about 45 -r discs already so I have been able to do it but cannot now. I checked and microsoft windows auto update is on so It might have been that but I don't know what one to remove from the install programs if that is it. I did run regcleaner between the uninstall and reinstall's so it was all gone so I don't think it was a nero update that did it.

I did run ASPI again and then aspichk and found it installed and is applied now fine. After reinstall it wasn't.

Thanks in advance for any help on getting me back burning. It's a pretty expensive paperweight for me right now since my tv dvd player won't play +r but will play -r disc's.

I'd imagine since you've done a regclean you might not be able to do a plain manilla XP 'roll back'.
Are you saying aspichk says ok now? Try ForceASPI?
You reinstalled Nero 6.0.0.0? That need upgrading as it's notoriously buggy.

I did the forceASPI and then a defrag on the drives I have. It now gives me a 'burn failed at 1x' or a 'burn failed at 2x' (it is 2x media - dvdrw disc) and the prompt window says SCSI/IDE failure. This is the first portion of the Nero log file... Thanks for any insight - at least it is doing something now!

        I'd really upgrade that 6.0.0.0.
I've not heard if two Neros can coexist.
Your extract doesn't include the media id - have you thought to try a -RW?
Your Pioneer and Hitachi are SCSI or USB2? I see they are ID0 and ID2. Is there something else on ID1? I'm wary of the DMA having '?' - I've seen that before.
I think we need the rest of that report.

            fixed!

I did a few things and it's fixed...

I unistalled and reinstalled Nero 6.0
I reinstalled Nero ASPI (same as before)
I switched the Drive from slot 2 to slot 1 on the motherboard
I installed a new cable on the drive (the old one looked fine though)

It seems to burn dvd-r and dvd+r from 1x to 4x with no problems!

I did all the above without trying to burn another disc (I was trying with dvd-rw so it wasn't like I was making a ton of coasters all this time - just 2) again, but one or all of the 4 worked it out...

            Thanks for everyone's advice...

            Gus
