    codec help

    want to preface with the fact that i DID read the "read first" thread, but when i clicked on the first link to dl, it took me to a page that doesn't exist.

    so i dl'd an .avi file that i doesn't show video on my windows media player. there's an error that says "error downloading codec" or something like that. then i get just the sound.

    how do i know which codec to download? i tried (briefly) the fourCC filter but didn't understand it, and couldn't open anything from the dl except for the .exe file....so i didn't know what applications to apply.....

    ...anyway, is there just a codec that i can download to make it play, or is it more complicated than that? any help appreciated. all i have on my computer is windows media player. thanks in advance!

      thanks. will do. can you provide a link for me? i clicked on the link in the "read first" thread, but it was a bunk link.

      and one more question....once i dl it, all i have to do is play the .avi w/windows media player and it will work, or do i have to somehow manually route it through the filter?

        You will find all the versions here:

          installed it, but it still won't play. same thing...when it's getting ready to start up, there's a quick message saying "error downloading codec). i dl'd gspot, and ran it through there. i have this info. from it

          4CC: DX50/divx Name: DivX 5.0
          Stat: Codec NOT installed

          i'm assuming i just install the codec named DivX 5.0?

            That should hopefully solve your problem.

              thanks. is DivX 5.0 an actual codec? don't see it anywhere.

              how would i install it.

              i obviously am very limited in my computer expertise and would appreciate any help or explanation where to go from here. (i don't even know where to find the codec or what hardly what a codec is).

                Get it from DivX.com

                  sorry for seconding this post but...

                  @mole351

                  just install the divx codec pro 5.1
                  there is an adware financed version in the softwaresection
                  of this site. install and reboot anew.

                  to disable the spyware in this codec:

                  start--> execute-> type in >msconfig< . (without the brackets)
                  then refer to the autostart menue of the new window, that pops up. here you will find a program named "Trickler" or "GainTrickler"
                  just disable this one and it won´t spy again.

                  note that you must remove any prior divx codecs when installing this (also divxcodecs brought along by codec packs as well as the
                  direct show filters of these!!!!)

                  if this still does not work goto:

                  Start-->Programs->Divx pro codec adware-->
                  decoder configuration utilitiy-->(new window) Quality settings-->
                  and enable the "support generic mpeg4 " option.
                  divx pro will now try to jump into all Mpeg4 codecs that it knows.

                  you MUST disable the ffd show (direct show ) codec before,
                  or configurate it to only decode Xvid!!! NO DIVX 5 .

                  very significant testing of mine revealed that it uses less system resources....

                    the ffdshow link is up-to-date in the "read first" thread but you have to read the latest post:
                    Talk about all other file container formats and video codecs in this forum, including Ogg, RMVB, MOV, ASF, WMV ...

                    I don't think you have to install DivX.

                      well a lot of people in other forums (mostly german)
                      have experienced problems with FFD SHOW. especially
                      on computers with lesser performance.
                      thats why I do not suggest to use ffdshow. also a lot of
                      compatibility problems appeared.

                      it is, that a lot of people in germany start to build their own
                      "divxplayers" they want it silent and therefore with not so overdone cpu speed... needs cooling .... blah blah bla and so on.
