Old computer+DVD copying? can it be done?

I have a celeron 500mhz computer with about 256 ram. I want to add a new dvd-rw thru usb or ide to copy back up my dvd collection, but I was wondering if my computer has the juice?

does anyone know or can anyone help me with this?

how long does it take to copy a dvd?

The CPU's speed would be adequate, as would the amount of memory. However, the fact that it's a Celeron (rather than a fullblown Pentium) chip MAY present a problem...

first of all : you might have an usb 1.0 or 1.1 interface
on your old computer. The datatransfer with an USB drive
        would take quite a time!!!
        2. you might encounter breaks if that usb drive is in constant read,
so you have to store that video data (all the vob files or datafiles) on harddisk first! because any reading error will stop
the encoding. Then, enough discpace provided, you will have
an image or files ready to burn onto dvdr.

it is possible to back up one DVD.... but not a collection
that takes too much time.....if you want my opinion!

          "what do you mean?"

What I mean is that the Celeron processor has a reduced set of instructions as compared to a full-blown Pentium chip - and, therefore, may NOT be able to handle the DVD backup process...

Celerons are extreemly low end and very very slow, regardless of MHz speeds. Even if you had a 2.4GHz Celeron your programs would still be running much slower than an actual Pentium. The reason it is so slow is because of the low amount of L1 and L2 cache as well as a slower Front Side Bus speed.

I would suggest giving it a try at the max speed and if the CPU can't keep up then I would suggest trying to burn at 1x or 2x. If this fails then you are SOL unless you upgrade your CPU and more than likely your motherboard too.
