Need to edit an existing DVD

I've been asked to take an existing DVD, and add an audio tag with text on screen to two segments of a three segment disc.

    (No copyright issues )

I have full-tilt video editing tools, but have no clue about editing a DVD.

I figure (maybe) I can capture the existing audio and video into my editor, add the tags and output the stuff back to mpeg2. But that would be recompression. (Or maybe harmlessly convert the .vob files back and forth to and from normal video with some s/w tool y'all are aware of.)

If that's possible, and I can get back to newly updated vob files without serious harm, can I then simply replace the original vob files with these newly modified ones, and then have a new "master" for making updated copies?

In other words, can I go from vob to video and back to vob without damage?

If so, can I simply replace the vob files and not affect the menus?

Exactly what sort of data do the .bup and .ifo files contain?

Thanks in advance for any light y'all can shed for this DVD rookie.

Vobedit to extract the streams out of the vob's (no recompression, no quality loss).
Ifoedit or rejig to mux back video, audio, subs.

Replace the vobs: might affect the menus. You might have to re-author the dvd.

ifo contains all the dvd structure information, bup is backup of the ifo.

I'm having a similar problem. But trying to figure out what happens if I don't have the orginal file source. Some one made me a DVD with Menus and extras. I want to re-author the sound file on the Main movie. Any suggestions to add this in.
