    An alternative to TMPGEnc?

I'm new to the Digital conversion game, and have been using WinDv to capture AVI files (via a DAC-100) and then TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG.

This latter however takes forever and a day - typically about 10hrs for a 1hr 45min film. I've been leaving it going all night.
The conversion is of great quality though.

Can anyone recommend an alternative? Basically the only editing I would want to do after conversion is removal of commercials and bad frames and for that I'm going to try Womble's Video Wizard.
