    codecs kill explorer!

I know other people have had this problem, but I've yet to see a really clear explanation, much less a fix. Ever since I installed SP2, windows explorer crashes everytime I try to access an Xvid (yes, Xvid, not DivX) avi file. I get the "we're sorry explorer has to shut down (and we're not telling you why)" message, and explorer disappears (along with all of my desktop items, the status tray, etc.). As a result, I can't move (drag & drop) these files or erase them! I know I have the latest codecs. Anyone have any ideas?? I'm running XP pro.

are you sure you have the latest divx codec? 5.2.1? because the "explorer crashing" issue was solved in that version...

anyway, go into "divx decoder configuration" and look around for an option "support generic mpeg-4", and make sure it is unchecked

if that doesn't work, uninstall divx/xvid, and download the latest version of "ffdshow"... that should solve the problem

Thanks for your response, ziadost. To update, last nite (before reading your post) I uninstalled both DivX & Xvid ... & I still had the problem!!! After uninstalling, I ran regedit, rebooted, but no joy. I will try running ffdshow tonite & see what happens. Could there be any other codecs hidden on my system causing the problem? If so, how would I detect & unistall them??
      Many thanks again.

could be a result of spyware/adware... download "spybot" or "ad-aware" to check, if ffdshow doesn't solve it

Thanks ziadost ... actually, I think ffdshow did the trick! I uninstalled Xvid & DivX, and installed ffdshow as you suggested ... success!!! I can move, view and work with the avi files!! Oddly enough, when I reinstalled DivX 5.2, the problem came back ... so I uninstalled. And I do run adaware, spybot AND a registry cleaner on a regular basis.
          Doesn't everyone?
Thanks again for your help ... many blessings on your House!!
