Check the file's information under Virtualdub (File -> File Information). Post what you see here.

when trying to load the file into virtual dub, i get the message 'cannot detect file type of....................'

hence cant load it into VD

Seems to be a 'non-AVI' file (XviD or not). Try playing that file in a different player that supports other formats (i.e. RealPlayer, Quicktime, etc.).
