    new dvd drive glitching badly

    Hi,
Just installed a new Dual Layer 16xDVD+-R/RW in my dell 2400 running xp.
I have about 18 Gig free space and 256Mb of ram and a 2.2? processor.
I put it on the second IDE plug and set the jumper to slave.
Plugged the audio cable supplied into the mother board ( internal sound device I think ).
The drive comes up in my computer as E:\

    It came with nero 6 ( 6.3.1.20 ? ) cd.
I used the drive to install the "suite" of the first 3 programs in the install menu ( default install? ). Others optional it says.
    That seemed all sweet.

Fisrt DVD I put in I got asked to set default drive for dvds so I sellected E:\

So I thought I did everything right......

When playing a dvd through nero showtime ( tried windows media player as well ) it glithches really badly.
Tried several DVDs the one that came closest to behaving itself was my Eagles hell freezes over. It still glitched and lost sinc with audio from time to time.
Others wont play at all and showtime freezes and wont repond.

I think I may have a clash with my stock cd burner and will try taking it out and making the new drive the only one.
Will also try uninstalling my sonic cd burning software if anyone thinks these steps will help.

Others have said should have no probs but y'know that usually means you're gonna hit a wall somewhere

Meanwhile does anyone know whats going on?
CPU runs at or just below 100% while playing DVD's. Is that normal? Seems to glitch most when it peaks.

Try using a dedicated DVD software player, such as WinDVD or PowerDVD...

Thanks. Found a trial download 29Mb on my dial up
Will let you know how I get on.

By the way, the drive plays all other types of disks and media fine apart for a certain type ( immation ) of recordable cd.

Someone also mentioned enabling DMA in the device manager.
Looked under DVDR/RW DX162D-A. Not there.
Found it in Secondary IDE properties/advanced settings.

      Says
      device 0
transfer mode : DMA if availiable.
Current transfer mode : Ultra DMA 2

      device 1
Tranfer mode : DMA if ava...
      Current transfer mode : PIO

What does that mean and could it be a prob that device 1 transfer
says PIO not DMA? Can't seem to change it.
Or shouldn't I be fiddling with things I don't understand?

Well winDVD is 21% done not long now....................................

        Says I need directX9......mmmm......
        That is already installed?!?!

Just to make sure, I tried to install directX9 from disk.
It went to the finish and said it was installed.
        Did a restart....opened winDVD6 setup.....same message.
Is there a later version of direct x than 9?

If not then something screwy goin on here.

I've recently installed a program called Image mixer 1.5 for Sony DVD handycam ( before I installed DVD drive ).
It installed something called MicroStaff WINASPI.
        Maybe useless information...don't know......

        Bit at a loss now.

          Ok,
          problem solved

I uninstalled Sony Image Mixer 1.5 and MicroStaff WINASPI.

Now my DVD drive is fully functional!

Seems MicroStaff WINASPI is installed when installing software associated with digital cameras not just Sony also Fuji.
Came upon a few posts around the place where people had found this on their pc's and didn't know what it was but suspected it was interfering with their DVD drives.

Pity as I now can't use Image Mixer.
Is there another program I could use for Sony DVD handycam that wont interfere with other stuff.
I can't view the Vid clips now I've uninstalled Image Mixer
They are mpeg2's but none of my players will now play them.
Windows Media, Winamp played them fine when Image Mixer was installed.

Hope this thread is of interest to someone as it seems to be a common but often baffling problem from what I've seen on google.

Just wondering about alternatives to Sony Image Mixer 1.5 so I can use my partners DVD handycam.

Should I reinstall Image mixer and try to skip the MicroStaff WINASPI part of the setup ( can't hurt to try I suppose ).

Should I start a new thread?

              Thanks for replies Setarip
I'm going to thoroughly read thru as many threads as I can and see what I can suss.
