    Power Calibration Error

I have a NEC 3510 dual layer burner and guess what? It gives me the power calibration error on both +/- discs. If I open up the tray and move the disc round a bit it sometimes works! I have the same problem with cds!

Any help would be much appreciated!

I can't post the log because it takes up too many characters.

If you need more info just holler..lol

PS I had the same problem with a Pioneer 107d drive as well! Grrr!

You only need to post the last part of the log - it saves every burning in that log file.

Sounds as there is a physical problem with the burner.

I have two dvd drives on the same ide, I use ritekgo4.... the computer won't recognise dvds when they go in (it thinks they are cds!)..although it plays them through power dvd etc..
I have a lens cleaner but it won't recognise the disc, so i can't run it.

First ide is set to ultra mode 6 and the secondary is set to ultra mode 2. i also have the latest offical firmware update installed! :0

      many thanks for replying!

I get a 'Power calibration error' or 'Calibration area (almost) full' error message. Why?

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).

This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (almost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

        Please try the following solutions:

        1. Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

        2. Try another brand of media.

        3. Try different power connectors, and for recorders, do not share power with other devices. It needs its own power connector. If the error occurs with an external recorder, the power source in the chassis could be the cause. As a test, try to take the recorder out of the external chassis and connect it internal.

        4. Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

        5. Send the recorder in for service.

The re-writer is on its own power cable, although sharing in the past has never been a problem. I updated the firmware and it burnt files I had backed up on my computer okay.

However I now have a new problem. It won't recognise any disc (DVD or CD) that I put in the drive and believe it or not, its gone back to power calibration error again!

          Any ideas???

PS When I put a backed-up disc in the re-writer although it shows as no disc being there it says the file format is RAW. When I put it in the other drive, which does recognise the disc it says the file format is UDF.. what does this mean?

UDF is the file format used by DVDs - if it says UDF, you're in business. Also, Window$ XP (and a couple of earlier versions of M$ Window$) can recognise UDF.

RAW means you are not recognising the disk. Sounds like a hardware problem with the burner.

Now one other thing. Uninstall InCD. There is also "clean tool" on the Nero site - see here.

Sorry, could you post the first part of the log file also.

What I did mean before was that the logfile could contain several different burning reports. The part you also should post is the one that describes our installed hardware.

In my experience this is typical of non-compatibility between the burner and the type of media you are using especially with the calibration error. Check here in the dvd burner section for burner and blank media compatibility www.videohelp.com. Can you try a different brand (preferably media code) and see if that works.

you're probably right but, my fault in leaving the other details out
i should have included "physically check jumper setting"

& also, i got those errors when i tried using auto-burn with nero &/or tried to burn at a faster speed (but the media wasn't up to it)

I have tried various media type and still get the same problem! This is the second drive that has done this to me!

They all started off quite happily burning Ritekg04 discs then stopped, for no reason obvious to me. I am going to take the drives that I have (pioneer 107, nec 3500) and try them in a friends computer to see if the work there.

I have tried all speeds of burning and get the same message!

If you mean the jumper settings on the drives, then I have had them out and checked them.

The 3500 now does not recognise any disc that I put into it because it shows up as RAW file format, although nero showtime will play them! I'm well confused..lol
