    still not working

    >You've not answered my question - Did you run WinDVD and change the default DVD drive to "M". Click on "Apply" ?

    M drive is the default.

I am wondering if I did something wrong when I ripped it, or if a different DVD will work. I guess I will try that later.

      still not working

I ripped another DVD with Smart-ripper, tried re-installing all the software and still no luck. I must have gone through the steps to try to playback about a dozen times.
I think it might instead have something to do with XP and the Dell version of WinDVD - I am going to start another thread to see if anyone has it working on the same setup as I have.
      Thanks Setarip for your help!

Sorry to hear of your lack of success. Perhaps another poster with a Dell laptop will provide a "cure"...

By the way, you do understand that there's nothing magical about naming the mapped drive "M:". It's just a drive letter higher than the highest one present on your system. In other words, if you have drives through letter "E:" on your system, you could just as easily use "F:" for the mapped drive.

Some people at this forum actually use the full commercial program...

This is not a flame, rather merely a statement of fact:

In light of the fact that this group of forums doesn't even permit warez requests, you may be surprised to find that not too many posters here agree with your "motto".

Also (read between the lines) some of the posters at these forums earn a living as producers of commercial software...

I not mean the small guys/programmer.Also not everyone have 30, 50 ,100$$ ++++ for soft. Its a problem of the industry/manufacturer when they cant protect his soft .
I hate warez & warez sites, i think you not understand me or my english is too bad...

I leave it now, before you misunderstand me much more.

I'm experiencing the same problem, WinDVD 3.0 (DELL OEM version) will not play ripped DVDs using the subst method, even after changing the default DVD drive letter in WinDVD's properties.
I've tried PowerDVD 4.0 and WinDVD 5.0 and they both work using either the subst method or by directly opening the VIDEO_TS.IFO file. I guess we'll just have to pay
