    Watching ripped DVDs

    Hi guys, full newbye here!!!

I've ripped some DVDs in the Hard Disk using Smart Ripper. I'm not able to see them using WinDVD.

I tried to backup the entire DVD, but I'm not able to choose language, subtitle, ... What happens is that I can't surf the DVD as the hardware copy! Any help?

    Thanks in advance, Luciano.

If you've backed it up properly/completely and saved it to a subdirectory named Video_ts, you can get WinDVD to recognize the directory as a "DVD" by mapping to a virtual drive as follows (assumes that you've save the Video_ts subdirectory to a directory named "Movie" on your D: drive - Do not type quotation marks):

From the desktop "Start" button, select "Run".
Type "subst m: d:\Movie" (Make sure to type a space between "m:" and "d:\Movie")
Run WinDVD and change the default DVD drive to "M". Click on "Apply"
Under "Playlist" change the setting from "File" to "DVD" and select "M:"
    Click on OK
You'll now be able to play the DVD from the hard drive with all the bells and whistles available.

When you're finished, go to the desktop start button and again select "Run". Type "subst m: /d" (Make sure to type a space between "m:" and "/d")

    Let us know of your success ;>}

Anyway thank for your help! Is ther anything else that I can try?

"but unfortunatly I get a message error from my PC."

If it's a "parsing" error, it means you've mistyped something - perhaps you omitted a blank space or added an extra one, or mistyped the directory name.

Since this 'mapping" procedure is NOT system or O/S limited (and it worked for your friend), try again - carefully!

              Setarip ...WOW!

I' ve reinstalled windows 98 se and now your procedure is working perfectly!

...but when I'm finished I'm not able to run the last part: "subst m: /d".

I get a message error. If I shutt off the PC and restart, everything becomes "normal" and I don't see anymore the drive m:

              What can I do???

Anyway thank you very much; your help has been very appreciated! Imagine our plesure in watching our ripped DVDs with different languages, extras, ...

              Ciao! Luciano.

At the very worst, you'll do no harm by shutting down your system and restarting - which will also eliminate the mapped drive...

                      Can't watch ripped DVDs

                      Hello,

I'm having this same problem watching my ripped DVD.

I've just ripped my first DVD to my HDD, it's XMen. I used DVDDecrypter, selected all files to rip. I pretty much followed the instructions on ripping from www.riphelp.com. I ripped it to c:\Multimedia\Videos\Xmen\video_ts

I then followed instructions on making a virtual directory :

                      subst m: c:\Multimedia\Videos\Xmen

and tried to run WinDVD, but no luck.

I downloaded DVDStarter and tried to playback that way, but still no luck.

I found this forum, followed this directions exactly, and STILL nothing. Not sure what to do now?

I'm running Windows XP. A difference I noticed (not sure if this matters) but your instructions say:
                      >Under "Playlist" change the setting from "File" to "DVD" and select "M:"

My options are "File" and "Disc" - I just selected "Disc" and clicked "OK" and nothing happens. WinDVD just sits there.
I tried clickig the play > button and still nothing.

                      Any ideas?

                      Thanks

                          To xnera

                          Did you:

Run WinDVD and change the default DVD drive to "M". Click on "Apply" ?

if you did (and you followed allof my other instructions correctly), just exit WinDVD and, with the DVD still in the drive, start WinDVD again. The DVD should start to play automatically.

                          By the way, you are correct - it was a typo on my part. It most certainly is "Disc" rather than "DVD" ;>}

                            Hi,

If there is a DVD in the drive, that always starts to play immediately. It's the ripped copy that doesn't play. I've started and stopped WinDVD too many times to count. The default drive remains at M:.

When I go to playlist and select disc and M:, should anything show up in the the playlist? Nothing appears there.

I have a version of WinDVD from Dell that came with the laptop, do you think that makes a difference?

You've not answered my question - Did you run WinDVD and change the default DVD drive to "M". Click on "Apply" ?

"If there is a DVD in the drive, that always starts to play immediately"

My apologies - I should not have made any reference to a DVD being in the drive.

"When I go to playlist and select disc and M:, should anything show up in the the playlist?"

                              No

"I have a version of WinDVD from Dell that came with the laptop, do you think that makes a difference?"

I have no way of knowing this. I do know that this method has worked for all others who have tried it...
