help please with subs

hi please help me with this problem i just downloaded a japanese anime and the subs come with a .rar with it and then i open it and click the dvosub and install it and when i open the .avi file it doesnt show any subs please help me what do i do exactly and sorry for posting here cause i dont know which thread to post at
