Plays with either no audio or no video...

I have an .avi file that according to gspot is "probably" a quicktime file. I can open it with quicktime, but it says it can't find the video compressor, but plays the audio. I can open the same file in winamp or windows media player, and it will only play video and no audio. Anyone know the problem? I have divx, xvid, ac3, etc codecs.

    Thanks,

    Jon

download & install the latest (alpha) version of "ffdshow"

try playing your movie with a player of your choice (i highly recommend "media player classic", as it plays just about anything )

if you still cannot play it, open the file in "virtualdubmod", and under "file", click "file information". post everything you see in the little window that pops up...

I managed to get the file to play using a player called "VLC Media Player". I tried using media player classic, but it would not play using that either.

that's because vlc has it's own arsenal of codecs and plugins.

Yes, I opened it in virtualdubmod and it says "Cannot detect file type of ..." and won't load the file.

then its likely that its not really an avi file, but a file encoded with an uncommon codec.

oh well, at least you can still play it
