How do I fit an XVID AVI onto 1 VCD?

    I have a 696meg XVID clip.
I want to convert it to VCD/SVCD but it MUST fit on one CD.
This must play in a standalone DVD player.
Scene selction would be nice, even just at specified fixed intervals (every 20 minutes) but is not necessary if it will make life harder.

    GSpot info>>
    VIDEO Ratio/Framereates etc:
    Ratio: 640x272 (2.35:1) [=40:17]
    Run time: 01:47:55 (155,249 fr)
    Bitrate: 771 kb/s
    FPS: 23.976

    AUDIO:
    0x0055(MP3) ID'd as MPEG-1 Layer 3
    123 kb/s (61/ch, stereo) VBR LAME3.96r / 48k audio.

    >>
    Renderer:
    Video:
    (S) --> AVI Splitter --> XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder --> DirectVobSub (auto-loading version) --> (R)
    Audio:
    (S) --> AVI Splitter --> MPEG Layer-3 Decoder --> Morgan Stream Switcher --> (R)

There are so many tools to choose from but none seem to do as i require, or are beyond my abilities. I have broadband so downloading tools is not a prob, and Ive a new burner with lots of spare 80min CD-Rs. Search hasnt revealed anyone looking to do as i am. Ill keep searching tho.

    you can't do it

    "Run time: 01:47:55 (155,249 fr)"

    you'll have to do it on 2 VCD's, i know it's crappy, that's why i bought a dvd burner.

anyway the method i use for doing what you need is:

    1) Use "TMPGEnc" (or "TMPGEncPlus") to convert the .AVI to compliant MPEG1-for-VCD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" VCD NTSCfilm wizard/template to accomplish this.

      What about modifying the .AVI?

Can i resize the AVI or do anything to it to get it to work?
If i cut out the credits it drops playing time to just over 103minutes?

The avi uses direct vob sub to put up subtitles.
Will these get encoded into the video as well.
The preview in TMPENc did show them?

Isnt there an MPEG3 video compression?
DVDs can play videos with mp3 audio??

I thought there was some standards of compression that 90% of DVDs can play?
I understand that uncompressed, fitting a video on a CD is not an MBPS issue but a time factor.

I guess my qurestion therefore is "what codecs" can i try that should compress video and audio but still play on most (not all) standalone DVD players.

If none then my understanding is way off and Ill drop the thread.

Thanks for your input by the way

The Bottom Line You Need To Understand Is You Cannot Be Over 80 Min

              Just burned a 120min(2hr) movie backup to 1 CD-R?

Perhaps my understanding of CD formats is wrong then.

I just burned a bin/cue combo of a movie backup to CD.
The movie just played in my DVD player.
              MPlayer2.exe properties says video info:

              MPEG1 Video Decoder 352x288 @ 25FPS
MPEG1 Audio Decoder CD Quality Audio

GSpot isnt meant for VCD .DAT files, but the renderer gave this info?
              >>>
DirectShow claims to be able to play the file. The following combination of filters were used:
              {F:\MPEGAV\AVSEQ02.DAT} (Source)
              {MPEG-I Stream Splitter} (Splitter)

              {MPEG Video Decoder} (Video Decoder)
              {Video Renderer} (Video Renderer)

              {MPEG Audio Decoder} (Audio Decoder)
              {Morgan Stream Switcher} (Audio Post-processor)
              {Default DirectSound Device} (Audio Renderer)
              >>>

Then to frustrate me more, this VCD also has scene selection. Rather you can skip to different chapters, Theres no startup menu, which is perfect for what I want to do with my other XVID movie.

              How can this be?
How do I convert my XVID movie of only 100minutes to this format?
Do I just re-encode it as MPEG1 with a reduced 352x288 as the dimensions of the video?
