Then you need the MP43 codec, you can find it in the nimo codec pack

Download the Nimo Codec Pack, a collection of all the frequently used codecs and filters
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

I am a newbie but, when I went to the site http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html to download what you suggested, on that site I could not see how to download V5.0.
I have read that site many times still have not a clue.
        Thank you.
        PS What are mirror links?

forget divx5 for the moment, it is brand new and contains some problems especial with the tools to use with, so go for the last "stable" version 4.12, eventually install 3.11 alpha first

I have VirtualDub, DirectX and now divx 3.11 and divx 412. Still getting the MP43 error message. It just seems crazy to have all four programs just to change an asf to avi. Guess it wasn't meant for me to try this.

Use one of the FOUR-CC changer programs (or a hex editor) to change the header to Div3 from MP43...

To convert asf to avi using Virtualdub you must have version 1.3 (other versions will not provide this function).

try the microsoft codec update (also in nimo & tsunami codec pack contained):
in the windows media technologies section of the microsoft download page

Thrawn - I went to the microsoft codec update. Is there a particular download I should be looking for?

Batman - Virtualdub 1.3 is the download I have.

setarip - What are the FOUR CC program changers (or a hex editor)? The only thing I could find that was close was in Virtualdud. Hex viewer.

                    Thanks all

Thrawn - I found the codec update. Downloaded it and still have the MP43 problem. Any idea what I am doing wrong?

this page shows some info about the codecs:

which divx codecs u got installed?
i would advice u to install divx3.11 alpha first and then divx4.12 with the no-answer at the question when installing 4.12

Thrawn - I do have divx3.11 and divx4.12. Reinstalled 4.12 with a No answer. Still error on MP43. I re-read FAQ in VirtualDub. It says I should use the Windows Media Player Codec when trying to charge a asf to avi. It does not say how to do this. Also could there be a setting in VirtualDub that I have wrong? The web site for the FAQ about WinMedCodec is http://www.virtualdub.org/virtualdub_faq#mp4v3
Is WinMedPlayCodec supposed to be automatic in letting asf change to avi?

I have heard that the asf to avi conversion using Virtualdub is not perfect. You may consider other alternatives such as screen capture software (Snagit or Camtasia).
