some media player for usb sticks?

Well: I'm looking for a way of playing video files (divx / xvid / other formats) from a usb stick without having to install codecs on the system used for playback. (they would have to be integrated into the mediaplayer or somehow just available on the memory stick)

I don't know if it's possible, but at least the media players I know require the codecs to be installed regularily.

Of course the player itself would also be required to run without writing anything into the system registry and without placing any files on the hard disk.

Thanks in advance for your help.

download 'VLC media player', it uses all its own playback filters, so you do not need to install anything to play files. BUT the actual program needs installation on the hard disk, but try installing it on the usb drive itself and see if it still works

    good luck!

      Hi Gethron

You can use Media Player Classic (freeware) directly from USB Stick or Jump Drive. It is a standalone program (no installation needed) with most of popular codecs included. It seems to load a bit slower in my PC with USB 1 than from hard drive

from my own experience MPC doesn't play xvid/divx (which i am assuming is the preferred format, due to the usb) without an mpeg4 playback filter/codec installed on a PC...

Media Player Classic version 6.4.8.5 with its built-in codecs is capable of opening and playing MPEG4 files itself

ok i just tried to play an xvid on the latest MPC on a PC with no mpeg-4 codecs installed (all source/transform filters in mpc were enabled, which is already default). it did not work, and as expected, the audio did. i installed ffdshow, it worked without a hitch

            same goes for divx...

btw, the OS was win xp pro SP2...

              Hello anonymez,

Thank you very much for correcting about MPC with DivX and Xvid codecs. After reading Gethron's question, I loaded the MPC to my USB jump drive and just concluded inadvertently that it worked with a removal drive without realizing that my PC has already loaded with both DivX and Xvid codecs. Sorry, my bad
