fitting movie to one disk?

hello, just learning here. I'm ripping dvds with smartripper, then converting the movie to mpeg form using dvdx. Only problem is I have to copy the movie to 2 vcds to then play on my dvd player.
Is there a way to compress the movie without losing quality, to fit onto one 700 MB 80 minute disk? Any help appreciated, thankyou.: :

I am also a newbie, but thought this link might help you. It uses a ripper, DVD2AVI, TMPGEnc and then Nero as the burner. I realize these aren't the same programs you're using but, these are very good programs. The article is very in depth and gives step by step directions along with pics for each step. It did the trick for me and I hope it will help you.
