Why are there pauses during film?

I was having problems with 1 out 4 movies they all paused about an hour into the movie. I then bought a better quality DVD (Sony) and it has helped. Some movies I put in a good quality DVD player (Sony) and it the picture pauses every few seconds. I put the same DVD in a crappy DVD player and everything is fine. I did not have any problems Shrinking or burning the disk. So why is it still pausing and what can I do to prevent it?
