Squashed images- xvid dvdplayer

Hi
i have just purchased an divx mpeg4 player and i would like to play some widescreen avi files. The problem is that the image is squashed vertically, so i get big black bits at the top and bottom of the image. I would like to make the image fit perfectly on the widescreen TV.

I purchased the dvd player so that i could skip the encoding bit which takes far ot long.

Probably an ESS based standalone, like a Philips DVP642. As I understand it they just don't work well for WS TV's.
