    Getting Started Advice

I am currently using VHS video recorded on a cctv network. My VHS dubs are usually 10-20 minutes long and often are used in court for Law Enforcement or Insurance reasons. I am switching over to DVR's to record video but will still have VHS (analog) video. I have been reading your guides on this forum and am a bit overwhelmed as to where or how to begin. I realize that I need to combine the analog and digital video to produce 1 video. What is the easiest way to convert analog to digital? When I back-up my video on the DVR to CD-R. The DVR puts the video into AVI files. Is there software that will allow me to use these files and join them with the converted analog video? What would be the best format to put this video in? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
