is there any free software that can convert wmv and mpegs to avi

VirtualDubMod can convert MPEG to an AVI, that is freeware. However, WM is harder, I use Ulead Video Studio for that, but its not free. However you can get a free trial from their website, www.ulead.com.

VirtualDub MPEG2 supports wmv. You can also frameserve wmv files to say VDubMod using AVISynth with directshowsource.

Open in VirtualDub MPEG2, save avi.

Open notepad, type directshowsource("whatever.wmv",fps=xx.xx), save as something.avs, open in encoder, save mpg/avi.

Neither is really that hard.
