On a Playstation 2 DVD feature

Being real new on DVD, I decided not to post this under "DVD playback", so here it goes.

Until recently my sole DVD player has been a Playstation 2 console, which does well enough, though its review at "Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity" (http://www.hometheaterhifi.com) isn't all roses.

However, I have read several articles on the difference among full-screen, pan-and-scan, and anamorphic DVDs, and I do not have the full picture yet, but I cannot set my PS2 at something else than "4:3". The Setup screen that you can get at startup allows me to set "4:3", "Full screen" or "16:9", but while playing any DVD the onscreen menu only gives me the "4:3" option, even playing anamorphic DVDs.

Granted, my TV set is 4:3; I thought setting it at "16:9" may give me a compressed picture of anamorphic video, or setting it at "Full screen" may allow me to pan and scan those. The fact is that I cannot set it to anything besides "4:3" at playback time.

    Thanks for any comment/help...
